The course is designed to help students develop appropriate working ethics with regard to professional translation, as well as acquire basic translation skills through continuous practice. The sessions in this semester will be divided into two parts. The first part focuses on translation from Chinese into English in the following areas: (1) general guidelines for translation; (2) practical translating skills; (3) basic editing skills. The second part is based on translating documents of different styles. An extensive array of examples and translation exercises will be arranged throughout this course so as to provide students with a clear overview of the ways in which a professional translator tackles texts in various styles. Practical tips for preparing for trials, entries exams/applications for graduate schools, and qualification tests will also be provided at the end of the semester.
